Ernst Hans Gombrich's "A Brief History of the World"


Vuole la leggenda che nel 1935 un amico editore propose a Ernst H. Gombrich, giovane e squattrinato laureato in storia dell’arte, di dare un’occhiata ad un libro di storia per bambini inglesi e di valutarne una possibile traduzione in tedesco. Gombrich non was particularly impressed by the book, and even went so far as to argue that he would be able to do better. So did this "Brief History of the World," the true tale of human progress reduced in just over three hundred pages, a little gem that covers the history from dinosaurs to the atomic bomb. Initially written with the intent to be a children's book, Gombrich uses language appealing, simple and transparent, and as such can equally affect both adults who wish to brush up the distant concepts learned in school (without the fear of being questioned), and those who, deep down, the desire to let still smoldering once enchanted by the networks embracing the history and back again, at least for a while, kids.
